What happens when a domain expires and enters the redemption period?
When a domain expires, it may enter a redemption period and stop working. During this period, the domain generally cannot be renewed through the normal renewal process.
Recovering a domain during redemption
A domain may be recoverable during redemption by paying:
- The redemption fee, which is about $80.
- The domain renewal fee, which is about $12.
The total quoted for recovery is therefore about $92. Contact support to confirm whether the domain can be retrieved and to request redemption.
If the domain is not recovered
The redemption period lasts approximately 60–65 days from the expiration date. After that period, the domain is released and may become available for purchase again. Availability is not guaranteed immediately; a domain broker may be needed if it does not appear for repurchase after the redemption period.
After renewal
DNS changes can take time to propagate after a domain is renewed. Allow up to 24 hours before troubleshooting the site’s DNS or page errors.
